This article about Ivanka Trump's NYC apartment in an ago issue of Instyle from a million years ago still tops my list of all time favorite lifestyle inspirations. And I still think about it, even five year later. In 2007, I was fresh out of grad school, had just moved to DC, and was charting my own little path through the world. I looked at this article and dreamed about the day that I too would sip morning tea in my adorable nightgown while gliding down my living room wall on my library ladder. Ivanka meets Breakfast at Tiffany's.

Glossy Shops: My trip to Mecca (otherwise known as HD Buttercup)

Not being from the west coast, H.D. Buttercup holds an attraction to me on the level of Disneyland. Except instead of overpriced amusement rides, it's sofas with too many zeros on their price tag. The amount of squeals and hand-clapping is exactly the same, though. When I was in LA earlier this month, I FINALLY got my pilgrimage there. And it did not disappoint: amazing upholstery mixed with interesting salvaged finds. In fact, if our Barn Sales had high-ended upholstered furniture (and heat, as I discovered on my trip there last weekend), I could probably get my fix on the east coast. Here were some of my favorite from my trip:

I looked up 'Manutailer' and it seems to mean: HD Buttercup invented word to make you want to buy things.

I'm putting all my carpets on tabletops now. Such a great mix.

This sofa was my absolute favorite. The back was angled just enough that it was impossibly comfortable! Plus, that ginger jar needs to be in my life, yesterday.

Shoved all the way back in the corner was this lovely little table that looked lonely.

I did something similar to this in my very first apartment and loved it. Two small stools are way better than 1 big coffee table in a small space.

I love the chain linked, hammered gold look of this lamp.

I have heels in this exact pattern. I think they need a chair-cousin.

This picture doesn't do right by the scale of this chair: which is big enough for 2 people. Or 1 person and 2 dogs in my case.

Here's my LA partner in crime, Ann, just after we talked about how many nights we could pass on this gigantic sofa watching movies. She was also my lunch date, here, where we devoured the most amazing burgers while a whole table of women drooled as they ordered their salads without dressing, cheese, or taste of any kind. Ah, LA.

Sold. Enough said.

Right now my work to-do list is 3 miles loooooong and most days I only see the daylights hours from behind the glow of my computer screen. My office space is less inspired than these, but they keep me going with the goal in mind of creating my own workspace one day that inspires my work.

I spotted this over on the Sweet Paul blog today and I'm dying for this tote that combines my loves of thick books and 90's rap songs I played on repeat in 8th grade.

I've been a reader since I was a kid (thanks Mom and Dad), but now that my life runs 100 mph, escaping into a book is a luxury. And I need this to tote around all my real books as I try to hold out on the digital world of reading as long as possible. True confession: I'm reading my first book on my iPad and despite the convenience, I feel like I'm cheating on all my paperbacks with each finger swipe of the screen. I can't even look at my bookshelves right now.

If I could paint my entire kitchen in chalkboard paint, I would do it in a heartbeat. Painting the top of an old table with chalkboard paint makes a laid back canvas to create a cute table for each meal. An oilcloth painted a la chalkboard would work too for less permanent occasions.

Joining the ranks of our beloved e-reads is a new kid on the block based in London with drool worthy shots of weddings(definitely heavy on the weddings), general lifestyle and crazy-amazing page layouts. I wanted to jump through my iPad screen into every single one of the wedding shots. English countrysides, Napa vineyards, and oodles of vintage inspired shots. Even if you're not on the bridal super-highway, the tabletop inspiration in here is enough reason to read.

"It's not that cold, It's not that cold, It's not that cold": That's what I'm telling myself this morning on my first day back on the east coast after a globe-trot through southern California last week. Last night I arrived back just in time to restart the red carpet entrances on my DVR and catch up to the running text updates I'd been getting about all the belts and deep-V's. My favorite were the nudes and silvers. Something about the subtle backdrop that made these ladies own it down that red carpet. So I translated this to the red carpet of my life and came up with these tabletop inspirations straight from Hollywood.

Kristin Wiig got ROBBED for Best Actress in a Comedy! I can't even get anyone to go see My Week with Marilyn with me. I feel partly responsible as my only star sighting in LA was Michelle Williams while I was stalking around the bungalows at the Beverly Hills Hotel yesterday. I'm sorry Kristin.

Who knew one of the best perks about living in the city would be all the great stuff that people leave on the street. Don't want your books? Put em' out on the steps. Done with your Wassily armchair? On the curb it goes. I'm not even kidding, my curb is apparently the local goodwill. I've taken to snapping photos on my iphone of all the great finds that I open my door to on the way to work, since those that love me most know my side table count is already a bit ridiculous. In this latest edition is this little silver-swoopy coffe table that would be seriously cool with a little tlc.

A quick polish to get the rust off, or even a shot of spray paint (I'm dying to see it in any shade of bronzy-copper) and it would look like an expensive find. And right...what to do about a top? Glass is an obvious choice and would be a snap to find. I also think a cut of stone like marble would be fantastic, a la this DWR little number. But really, any kind of unexpected material would look great and could be sourced cheaply.

Whoever said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder was most certainly talking about my bread baking abilities. That's right...bread baking. As in, from scratch. As in, one domestic accomplishment down. Personal triumphs come in all forms. Mine is in that misshapen loaf right up there.

"Bake my own bread" has lingered on the bottom of my life to-do list for YEARS. Mocking me because the premise of it is so simple yet I can't seem to accomplish it. "Be the kind of person that bakes their own bread," that's that my list was telling me. Simple ingredients, complex execution.

So with my (now) very wise lessons in breadmaking underway and two very unfortunate looking but delious products to show for myself this is what I've learned. Eat it up.

I got so excited over the new DwellStudio catalog in the mail pile yesterday that it looked like I had gotten a big ole' Tiffany's box slipped through my mail slot. I went head over heels for every.single.page. In my mind the new furniture line is a perfect blend of the classic shapes and modern pattern. Do you ever have the feeling that if you were to die suddenly, all your friends and family would have to do is scroll through your camera roll and they'd have an instant feed of your thoughts in the last weeks of your life.

Me too, and people would probably think I'm some kind of style schizophrenic because it would go something like this:

The city of Chicago has the highest percentage of alcohol-quote boards in the entire country.

Which is why I should live there.

"Learn to bake bread" has been mocking me from it's place on my life-to-do list for the last 3 years.

But my bread would look so cool in this.

Adventures in the Test Kitchen: Pies in Jars

Adding handmade elements to events not only infuses personality that can't be bought, but also helps keep costs down and stretch you budget farther. So this weekend I donned my apron, grabbed my spoon and helped a friend test out a favor option for her upcoming wedding. Turns out my Betty Crocker skills are a bit rusty. Here's how it went:

Step 1) Consider every which way to make and deliver handpies for a wedding, because I just read somewhere that those are all the new rage. Come up with nothing. Resort to the good old standby that anything in mini packaging becomes mind blowingly-adorable. Case in point: Pies in Tiny Jars.

Step 2) Walk to local hardware store to buy jars in different sizes. Take dogs into hardware store where they are oogled over like rock-stars. Feel like the guy that walked behind P.diddy with the umbrella while I'm holding their leashes.

Step 3) Dust off the old Betty Crocker and attempt homemade pie dough. Feel like a domestic goddess when the dough ball looks just perfect.

Step 4) Reward goddess-ness with some cocktails while baking.

Step 5) Peel, peel, peel, peel, slice, slice, slice, slice. Curse ourselves for not making some kind of berry pie. Realize at the end, we've got enough apples for to make pie every day for a month. Urgh! More cocktails.

Step 6) Begin the business of dough rolling. Watch helplessly as perfect dough ball crumbles into little pieces on the counter. Curse Martha Stewart, because somehow she and Betty are in on this together and have left out the secret trick of the recipe.

Step 7) Re-read Pies in Tiny Jars instructions and realize we're not supposed to be rolling at all. Somehow this is Martha's fault too, I'm convinced.

Step 8) Press crumbly pie dough into the bottom of little jars. Try to imagine doing this on the full scale of a wedding.

Step 9) Load up tiny jars with apple filling and top with a hand cut hearts because all my cookie cutters are gigantic. (why would I eat 1 tiny cookie when I could have 1 gigantic cookie and it's still count as just one, right?)

Step 10) Have enough apples left to make regular pies. Have no way to make a top crust because the dough balls were a disaster. Improvise by cutting out little hearts and putting them all over the top of the big pie. Ha! Take that Martha-Betty!

Step 11) Pop in oven and bake. Easy as.....Pie (sort of).

And that's exactly what happened at the Gap x Vogue pop up launch for the new 1969 Denim line. I'm on a mission to convince Gap to bring the Pico de Gap on over to DC's food truck scene if we promise to show up just as hiply dressed as our Cali counterparts.

Remember when I said this was happening all over the country. Well, it's happening now, so get yourself ready. But, it's not your wedding, so go low budget with the decor and save your pennies for a fabulous hat (or more champagne). I've been dying to try the paper flower tutorials I've seen fly around the blogosphere. They seem easy enough even for a non-craft whiz like me.

We didn't all ended up here together by happenstance. Each of us had our artistic passion spurred along the way by a class, camp or teacher that gave us a blank canvas and told us to create what we loved. Twenty years later, we all created blogs. If they had only known...

Since today is Earth Day, we're all focused on consuming less and recycling more. That something less than you haven't consumed today, can be put towards helping a child be impacted by the arts in the same way you have been. Even $5 or $10 goes a long way.

Sometimes it's what's beyond the table that counts. Earlier this week I bookmarked this wedding featured on Green Wedding Shoes with photography by (once like a spark) Photography and I think I've gone back to look at it again every single day since. I cannot get over the homespun,totally cool accents of this (goat farm, yes!) wedding dinner.

I know everyone picks two wedding colors to make their theme. Like it's your introductory statement of yourself as a bride. "Hi, I'm black and coral in June." Which is all fine and dandy, but this wedding threw that box out the window and just used them all. And it totally works! Check out the full post with the gorgeous photos here. Hitting the Nail on the Head(board)

Twice last week I spotted nail trim headboards that I couldn't get off my mind. Maybe it's life telling me to finally check off 'pick out headboard' from last year's to-do list. Somehow they are my decision weakness and I can never commit. Bold! Too Bold? Traditional! Too Traditional? I'm in search of a good dream analyzer who can give me the lowdown on what this mean for me.

I'm leaning towards a DIY project with a go bold or go home approach. Life motto's should make for good headboards too, right?

So in all actuality, I had something completely different in store for today but a link in Daily Candy caught my eye this morning and 20 minutes of clicking around later, here we are. It quite possibly might be a Thursday and Friday tabletop week, this week. We'll see. I love being the executive in charge of making not-at-all-important decisions.

Anyways, back to the drinking. Eat local/Drink local...not just a passing fad. Eastern Shore based, Blackwater Distilling, (first in the state of MD since prohibition) recently launched Sloop Betty. This pretty faced pinup is also backed by a commitment to use local ingredients and pursue organic certification. Still a little rare in DC, check here to find it.

Yesterday was one of those Sundays that stretched out in front of you and made you remember that...hey, you have all day to do whatever you want....and hey, it's spring...and hey, don't forget...this city is bigger than your sofa and dvr'd reality tv. Which is precisely why Sunday is my favorite day of the week. Socially acceptable drinking before noon having nothing to do with my decision. So I clicked off my reality tv and went to see some reality filmaking instead. Bill Cunningham New York was a fantastic documentary inside the life of the original street style photographer.
Gorilla street style photography is not only trendy , it's where the trends start. But all of it started with Bill, who published his first page of chopped together photos from the streets in the New York Times in the late 70's. Fastforward 30 years of so and you'll still find him, on his bicycle shooting the streets of New York, Paris and abroad. The most famous photographer you never knew was there.

The documentary is striking in it's simplicity. Bill Cunningham is striking in his simplicity. In a city where social climber is tattooed like a gang sign, he loves his work, loves clothing and the rest is simply not to be concerned with. Do what you love because you love it, not because of what it will bring you. (Which in this case, brought him high honors from the French Ministry of Culture, which he accepted wearing his workday standard blue street sweeper smock). Something I plan to repeat to myself daily.

His more than modest living teeters from striking to a bit alarming. One of the last artists in residence at Carnegie Hall, the film follows Bill as he settles on an apartment to relocate to after being forced out of his studio. The furnishings of which consist of 301 file cabinets full of his entire photo archive and 1 twin bed. I hope my simple can have a balcony.

My absolute favorite clip in the film comes from one of his long photographed socialite acquaintances who simply quips "Bill has never taken a nasty photo in his life. He focuses on fashion and photography as positives that build you up, not tear you down." There are no Do's and Don't's with black boxes scrawled across shamed faces. He's not about that and doesn't want his work to be either. Just real women in their real clothing, looking real and beautiful. If you have the Do's why do you need the Don'ts?

Love is patient, love is kind. Love is these awesome details from a vineyard wedding this past weekend:

The bride wore her mother's veil with the most stunning lace trim that accented her other vintage details.

No table linens and beautiful wooden top tables felt decidedly modern

The couples favorite peanut butter cookies served as favors and snack for the post reception ride back to the hotel.

The vintage details of this wedding felt modern with fresh with some pop of bright fushias and pinks in the flowers. Mixed in with the bride's family hatpins to add a bit of sparkle.

(** Insert Abby jumping up and down clapping and screaming, because this chica is INSPIRATIONAL to every creative entrepreneur!!**) As the owner of Minnesota based, Festivities and Type A Events, Jennifer creates special events and corporate meetings with a growing trail of awards and accolades following behind her.

The Challenge: Combine the front office and reception area for both businesses with enough polish for the corporate clients but incorporating plenty of style for a special events side.

Anthro does Tabletops

Anthropologie is one of my go to spots for great tableware. I'm always surprised by the affordability of the homewares. I can't get a skirt for less than $200, but the bowls sell for $12. I've decided it would mess with karma to start asking questions. The patterns and colors are perfect for creating a more mixed than matched aesthetic. Yesterday, they launched Tabletop Design to indulge your inner tablescaper. A polyvore-esque interface filled with all their wares.

I love the option to add background texture and the interface is easy enough to use. I do wish the resize tool was more of a drag and drop and the saving options didn't work every time for me. But I was able to add items to my cart straight from my boards and liked that I could pull items from different lines. Online shopping and inspiration boards all in one are the next generation for e-commerce.

Recently for a couple of projects, I made a few personal inspiration boards. Culling down thousands of images into those few inspirational clips that add up to you is harder than it seems. Like staring at 37 shades of grey paint and wondering which one will be perfect on your wall. So, I took the opposite approach. If I wanted it to feel like me, it had to be instinctual. No over-thinking required. And every time I look at them, I wouldn't change a thing. After a couple of requests, I decided to share:

For all the times you've stood in the dressing room at H&M and cursed them for not having an online outlet that you could order different sizes/colors for you $2.99 tank top, they may have just paid you back 10 fold. H&M has launched their online site in the European market including a fantastic home line. And rumors have been flying that the US version of the website will launch at the end of 2011. Pillows for $6.99, yes please!

After attending an Oscar's gala this weekend that featured a full size candy "bar" and passed hor'derves of chicken nuggets and tater tots (in honor of Toy Story), I loved the tablescape of the month in House Beautiful by Dylan's Candy Bar.

What did I learn?: Grown adults dressed in black tie swarm around plates of rice crispy treats like it's the last morsel of food left on earth.

Bleary-Eyed Color

This little girl right here is Roxy Muggle the Puggle. For those of you not up on your pup-speak. That's 1/2 beagle and 1/2 pug. In reality she's 1/2 curiosity and the other 1/2 goat. She likes to eat things she's not supposed to. Mostly sunglasses, cell phones, and sharpie markers. Yesterday, it was an entire box of sugar cubes. Apparently she was trying to prepare for the royal wedding watch part y. She keeps life interesting. She also kept me up all night long sick as a...well, dog...from her little escapade. Don't worry, she's fine this morning. Happily tucked into her dog bed ready to nap it off.

Weekend Barn Crawln'

Sorry for the technical difficulties this morning. Probably entirely due to the third glass of champagne at the Oscars gala last night. But its worth the wait because I'm super excited to show you some great shots from this weekend. On Saturday, I traded in bar crawls for a Barn Crawl in the beautiful countryside on the outskirts of DC. Barnsales (think pop up antique/flea market in a barn) are a new discover to me, but I'm instantly addicted. Check before you go because they're only open selected weekends/times. It just so happened that this weekend, local area barns teamed up to all open for the same weekend. And thus a barn crawlin' we went.

I basically got on the floor and hugged this chest goodbye because I was so devastated to leave it behind. Someone please buy it and invite me over for playdates.

Next up was Chartreuse & Co. which is actually a collection of 3 barns all on the same property. I could basically die and go to heaven and heaven would look exactly like this.

The first 2 barns are salvaged and not-refinished pieces for AMAZING prices. I saw chairs for $7, old doors for $12. All need work, but great finds. The largest barn is a combination of refurbished pieces and new pieces.

This old typewriter was in nearly mint condition and oh so, so cool.

I loved the detailed backs on this set of chairs. Sadly, they were already in someone else's sold pile.

This secretary haunts my dreams with its amazingness. Priced under $100, I'm kicking myself for not scooping it up. I would swap out those red pulls for some brushed gold and stock it to the brim with fantastic stationary.

I found this fabulous fur wrap for such a good price it would have been a crime not to take it home with me. The matching hat is going to be transformed into something else, because I look like a ridiculous Russian school marm in it. My lovely fur made it's grand debut last night at the Oscar's gala...to many smashing compliments. Mostly from myself to myself in the mirror.

This is the party hat I would want to wear when I'm 80.

I also couldn't resist this beautiful gravy boat (cue secondary life motto) in a fairly rare pattern (Queens' Solid Green). I'm going to start piecing together a set for myself from ebay.

The theme of your Oscars party menu should be: simple. You can't be in the kitchen flambe-ing your entree while the best dress of the night strolls down the carpet. Plus, everything thing you serve needs to be eaten with eyes locked on James Franco, so think glorified finger food.

Main Entree:
Pizza-Buy the dough and assemble the rest yourself. Fancy up the toppings for your wow factor
1) Caramelized onions and gorgonzola
2) Shrimp and red peppers
3) Fresh arugula, prosciutto and figs (fig spread subs in the off-season)

Cocktail:
Lillet Champagne Cocktail
(or sub in any slightly sweeter white wine. Add a dash of flavored
vodka for those who can sleep in on Monday)

Dessert:
Mini-Pies are the new cupcake.

Everyone else, hit up the bakery for some turnovers

Sweet and Salty Popcorn Topping:
-Mix ground ginger, crushed red pepper, pinches of sugar and salt and sprinkle over buttered popcorn

The New Talbots?

I use to roll my eyes and endlessly complain every time my mother would walk me into Talbots and hold up an endless array of sweaters she thought would look adorable and overly age appropriate on me. Whatever age I've happened to be over the years, I've always counted their wares as a store for those 10+ years above that age. So, yesterday when one of my most stylish friends posted a status update about loving everything she saw at Talbots, I was a little unnerved. Then this little ad pop'd up on the side of my screen and I thought "Oh, cute jacket..Loft? JCrew?......OMG, Talbots." Either I'm on a slow decent to mom jeans and mock turtlenecks, or Talbots is revamping their image. Dear god, save me if it's not the later.

This week while everyone was scooping up roses off flower store shelves, I picked up these gorgeous hydrangea at my local market for a whopping $2 a stem and they've been beauty-ing up my kitchen all week.

Plus, who needs roses on Valentine's day, when this LL Bean tote arrived with one of their new modern monogram styles from my very best valentine...my mom.

Celebrity product lines are hit or miss in my opinion. I don't know where the unwritten rule says that once you make 3 movie you automatically get a fragrance deal, but I'm a little over celebrity scent lines. But when partnered with a big retailer, many offer some pretty stylish home and fashion wares at affordable prices.

I'm still on the fence about Rachel Bilson's Edie Rose Home line available at Macy's. Handsketched details and textured plates are high on the cool factor. But some of the pieces look like they would go straight to the garage sale pile.

Mmmmmmm....not sure about these. I like the concept of the bird plate, but I don't think I could eat with those creepy bird eyes staring at me.

Loving this super easy and interesting table setting from Handmade Weddings (Sabrina Moyle and Eunice Moyle of Hello!Lucky and Shana Faust).

This book should really be called, "Handmade Table and Event Awesomeness" because it translates far beyond weddings. Re-purpose this for any clam bake or kids party, or even little hands learning which fork goes first.
