See Ya 2009!

My 2009 resolution was to spend New Year's-2010 on an island somewhere, doing nothing but staring at the ocean, sipping a drink and remembering how refreshing a fresh start can be.

Hmmmm....well it's currently 34 degrees and sleeting here in DC, which feels light years away from island living, and I seem to have lost all track of time between January and December.

Soooooooo...NY Resolutions 2010: Take more time to savor the moments as they come...and make it to that island for NY-2011!

Happy New Year!

Cozy New Year's Tabletop Ideas

By New Year's Day everyone is spent from weeks of holiday hubbub, but still has time off to get together and eat! Without all the predefined Christmas images cluttering up your creativity, it's a great day to entertain with no pressure or June Cleaver expectations.

Here's a basic tabletop with some ideas for expanding. All if these pieces can be gathered from your current stock or purchased at your local big box. These are all from Tar-jay and the whole lot would be less than $90.
  • What was your glittery holiday wreath, makes a great base to set your tired stand in.
  • Use the tiered stand as a serving piece for a lazy meal of appetizers and small bites.
  • For a cozy chic feeling, use a vibrant plaid scarf as a runner, or twist it around your tiered stand and slip some gold bulbs in for an really easy centerpiece.
  • No one wants fancy stemware on New Year's Day (we're all a little too hungover to handle the good stuff). Keep glasses low and solid.
  • Gold charges give an otherwise cozy, rustic table just enough glitz to be holiday appropriate.
Other ideas to make it memorable:

Pull out the scrabble game and use the tiles to spell out guests names for place cards. Or scatter letters around the table an let people linger over their plates while they play a little table top MadLibs and see what combinations they come up with.

Use old baby photos as placecards, or if you're a more adventurous crowd.....

Pick your favorites from Awkward Family Photos and assign them to the friend who most fits the image. Roll around with laughter at what everyone got assigned.

Beauty Under Foot: Dash & Albert Rugs

Last night I had dinner with a good friend and our conversation turned to rugs (don't they always). Over a glass of wine, we both lamented about the search for a great rug. You know, a really great rug. That illusive combination of an interesting but not overwhelming pattern, a little texture, tough enough for our beloved pets, a pop of color.... and oh yeah, one that doesn't cost a jillion dollars. Where are you rug of my dreams?

So this morning I went searching. There has to be something out there in that big world (wide web) to satisfy all my needs. I'm a smart girl with lots of connections (err...web bookmarks), this should be a snap. Well, let me tell you, I've been down there in the trenches...and there are some hideously ugly prospects lurking around every corner.

And then my searche lead me to Dash & Albert and the good rug fairies suddenly were in my corner. Any company named after two adorable pups that has a policy of "dog testing" every product, is a step in the right direction. And wait....they're totally affordable! Cotton rugs are under $200 for a 6'x9'. Wool gets a little bit pricier, but still reasonable for wool.

I'm drooling over this zebra print. Not for everyone, I know, but certainly for me. And I'd layer it with a large Cecil underneath and a little something plush on top.

Chocolate Tartan Cotton Woven I think this would be fantastic in a little boys room.
